Photo: Emily Holland/The IRC From Eva Mogensen, in New York: The day before Thanksgiving last year, the Sierra Leonean Kargbo family was finally reunited after more than 8 years apart. The family was separated while trying to escape the war in Sierra Leone. Ali Kargbo was the first to arrive in the US. He’s spent the last eight years building a new life for himself and his family: buying a home, sending his children to school and trying to bring his siblings to New York. At Newark International Airport, that wish finally became reality. 'I feel so happy that I get to see him. I feel like a miracle,' Ali said as brother Ibrahim walked off the plane. With the arrival of Ibrahim (featured in this CBS New York video) and brother Sorie (above) the previous summer, this close-knit family is finally together again. On June 20th -- World Refugee Day -- Sorie Kargbo will speak about his family’s experience at an IRC event at the Hemsley Hotel in Manhattan. The event is open to the public. You can RSVP here. Stay tuned for more! Posted By: theirc | Africa, Refugees in the U.S. Permalink |
