A painting by Michael, 9, a refugee from Iran whose family came to the United States in 2004 and settled in the Dallas area. Several of Michael’s paintings sold at an art show and auction this spring that raised more than $30,000 for International Rescue Committee’s Dallas refugee resettlement office. Even though this was his first time at the show, Michael sold all of the paintings he entered and raised more money than any of the 45 artists who took part. Michael’s mom Soheyla says that Michael loves this painting, of a family, the best. “He likes it when families stay together and are close with each other, being happy, so that's why he painted that one,' she says. Soheyla, a professional artist who was in the show last year, says that since the show Michael has begun to take his work very seriously: “Before he would start paintings and never finish them—you wouldn't believe how many paintings he has started. But now that he sees that people like this work, he takes it seriously and wants to finish them all.' Posted By: theirc | Children & Youth, Refugees in the U.S. Permalink |
