The Somali Bantu are often called “Africa's Lost Tribe.” During Somalia's civil war in 1991, the Bantu had no allegiance to other Somali clans and thus no means of protection. They suffered looting, rape and murder at the hands of warring factions and fled on foot to refugee camps in Kenya.

In 1999, the U.S. pledged to accept members of this fiercely persecuted group. Many delays later, the first Bantu arrived on American soil in 2004.

The IRC is helping Somali Bantu families start over in Boston and other U.S. cities. These images tell a universal story that so many refugees experience, full of moments of learning, community and joy.
